Eligibility — Mathematics Specific
- Master’s Degree in Mathematics with at least 55% marks (50% for SC/ST/OBC-NCL of HP and PwBD candidates) from a recognized Indian university or equivalent foreign degree.
- Must have cleared NET (UGC) / SET / SLET for Assistant Professor — accredited by HPPSC. SET-2026 qualified candidates are also eligible (window reopens for them if SET result comes after the closing date).
- Ph.D. holders are exempt from NET/SLET/SET if the degree was awarded in regular mode with: two external thesis examiners, an open viva-voce, two published research papers (one in a refereed journal), and two conference presentations from the Ph.D. work.
- Age: 18–45 years as on 01-01-2026 (+5 years relaxation for Bonafide SC/ST/OBC/WFF/PwBD of HP, where the post is reserved for that category).
Selection Process — Why This Is Different from CSIR NET
This is not a single MCQ-based eligibility test. HPPSC runs a two-paper written exam followed by an interview:
| Stage | Format | Marks | Nature |
| Paper-I | Objective (CBT/Offline), 1 hour — HP GK (30), National/International Affairs (30), Hindi (20), English (20) | 100 | Qualifying only — not counted in final merit |
| Paper-II | Descriptive Subject Aptitude Test (SAT) — Mathematics syllabus, 3 hours | 120 | Counts toward final merit |
| Personality Test | Interview at HPPSC, Shimla | 30 | Counts toward final merit |
Final merit = Paper-II (120) + Personality Test (30) = 150 marks. Paper-I marks don’t count once you clear the qualifying threshold.
- Minimum qualifying marks in SAT: 45% General / 40% Reserved category — fail this and you’re out regardless of Paper-I score.
- Negative marking: 0.25 marks deducted per wrong, multiple, or blank answer in Paper-I.
- Detailed Paper-II syllabus is on the official HPPSC website.
The Real Challenge: Descriptive Writing, Not MCQ Recall
Most Mathematics aspirants have trained for CSIR NET, GATE, or IIT JAM — all objective/numerical-answer formats. HPPSC’s Paper-II is a 3-hour descriptive exam: full derivations, proof-writing, step marking, and presentation all matter. This is a different skill, and it’s where most well-prepared candidates lose marks — not on concepts, but on how they write them.

Q2. What is the last date to apply?
14 July 2026, 11:59 PM — for both application submission and fee payment.
Q3. Is CSIR NET or GATE preparation enough for this exam?
Conceptual depth helps, but Paper-II is fully descriptive (3 hours, 120 marks) — different from the objective formats of NET/GATE/JAM. Answer-writing practice matters as much as concept clarity.

No. Paper-I is qualifying only. Final merit is based solely on Paper-II (120 marks) plus the Personality Test (30 marks).
Q6. Can SET-2026 qualified candidates apply even after the closing date?
Yes — if the SET-2026 result is declared after 14 July 2026, the advertisement window will be reopened for SET-qualified candidates.
